The Only Facial You Need Right Now

And Why You Shouldn’t Listen to Kim Kardashian West

While I did win this treatment through a Mother’s Day Contest, I was not blogging at the time and was not picked with intent to write about my experience (the office did not know about my intentions to begin writing again). I simply have an amazing husband who nominated me. My experience is 100% authentic and my own.

This post contains medical images that might make some people squeamish. Proceed cautiously or skip this post.

What if I told you your skin could look better than ever by simply using your own blood.

Grossed out? At first, so was I until I read more about the the science behind platelet-rich plasma and its regenerative growth properties. Did I lose you?

I’m talking about the “Vampire Facial”.

Better known by doctors as a Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Facial, this facial combines micro-needling with platelet-rich plasma from your own body for an all-natural way to promote collagen growth and skin repair. It’s ideal for fine lines and wrinkles, skin texture and pore size. I had it done and I plan to debunk what KK is saying about the treatment.

After making headlines from Kim Kardashian West for the photos she posted after the facial in 2013, this infamous facial is once again in the news - the very same person who launched its notoriety is now saying it was the most painful beauty treatment she’s ever experienced and that she regrets having it done.

Here’s why you shouldn’t believe Kim Kardashian West.

Because it doesn’t hurt - at least it shouldn’t if you are properly numbed. And Kim Kardashian West wasn’t numbed because she was pregnant (she discloses this information herself on her blog in this article).

As someone with first-hand experience, I figured my own testimony wouldn’t be enough so I sought out medical advice from the Greenwich Medical Spa, where I had my own treatments done. Amanda Pucci, aesthetic nurse practitioner at the med spa, had this to say:

“Microneedling with Platelet Rich Plasma is an amazing procedure for skin rejuvenation and scar tissue removal. Because of the needle depths used, this procedure is most comfortably done with the use of a topical numbing agent, which unfortunately cannot be used during pregnancy. With application of the numbing cream, this procedure is very tolerable and generally painless! I do not recommend this treatment be done without the use of a numbing agent due to the potential pain that can be associated when doing microneedling alone.”

Numbing gel is applied approximately 30 minutes before the treatment. It covers your entire face.

So does the PRP Facial really hurt?

It wasn’t painless, but it wasn’t painful either. I’m a pretty big baby when it comes to pain, and I would describe it as small prickles when the device rolled near my lips, hairline, or boney areas such as the top of my nose and forehead.

As part of my first treatment, I also had plasma injected into some areas of my face to promote regrowth and that was the most painful part. Injections are not part of every experience - it was something I discussed ahead of time with the practice and agreed fully aware that I find needle injections uncomfortably painful.

It pretty much feels like a sunburn - sensitive and tight. The plasma is washed off about 6 hours later and then my face only feels sensitive. I baby it with a TON of hyaluronic acid.

What Actually happens during a vampire (PRP) facial?

In a nutshell, you arrive, numbing cream is applied to your face, and your blood is drawn. While your face numbs, your blood is spun in a centrifuge. Once you are good and numb, the micro needling device is rolled over the face, creating tiny punctures.  Your plasma is gently rubbed over the area so the growth factors in the platelet-rich plasma can enhance the skin’s own healing abilities.

You can’t wash your face for 4-6 hours, so your face will feel tight as the plasma dries, and it will look raw/red. Over the course of the next 7 days, your skin will heal and rejuvenate and within 1 week it’s healed and looking absolutely gorgeous. You can see the whole process on my IG Story highlights.

Anything else I need to know?

This is known as a “wait and see” procedure because it works with your own body and takes 6-8 weeks before you see results. I experienced some results one week later. My complexion was clearer and some discoloration lessened. Even my husband noticed results, which is really saying something!

One week later, my skin is clearer, pores smaller and fine lines softened.

In short, I have done this for 4 consecutive months and the results are nothing short of amazing.

The texture around my chin from adult acne is smoother, scar discoloration gone, dramatic softening of my crows feet, and even some collagen growth in my cheeks and temples. I have two more sessions scheduled, so be sure to follow along on my IG Stories. My next PRP facial is early October!

I highly recommend you check this treatment out. It is not the same micro needling done at home with the GlowPro or other devices, although I do plan on using those devices to help maintain my results throughout the year. This specific facial can only be done in-office, so find a reputable medical spa or dermatologist who has been trained in the microneedling with platelet-rich plasma.

Better yet, if you are in or around New York City, talk to Amanda Pucci at Greenwich Medical Spa and thank me later.

While I did win the treatment through a Mother’s Day contest hosted by the Greenwich Medical Spa, my experience is 100% authentic. I was not blogging nor did the spa know I was planning on starting a blog when I won and treatments first started - I simply have an amazing husband whose nomination won me an amazing spa experience.
